Overview – In 1945, philanthropist Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., and engineer Charles F. Kettering founded the Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI) on New York City’s Upper East Side, with the vision of harnessing the latest research techniques in order to conquer cancer. This goal endures today.

As the experimental research arm of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center SKI is focused on the pursuit of fundamental scientific discoveries. The institute’s philosophy is that the best way to fuel progress in cancer treatment is to support scientists as they explore the unknown.

SKI research has also been a driver of clinical advances in cancer treatment, from chemotherapy to targeted therapy to immunotherapy. Their specialists treat every type of cancer, including the most important one: yours.

Treatments for cancer include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, as well as newer techniques such as interventional radiology and immunotherapy.

  • Memorial Sloan Kettering has one of the most experienced adult stem cell transplantation services in the United States, performing hundreds of transplants every year.
  • Chemotherapy can cure or control cancer or help ease its symptoms.
  • Immunotherapy is a new form of cancer treatment that uses the immune system to attack cancer cells.
  • Interventional radiology involves minimally invasive techniques using needles and catheters, and provides an alternative to surgery for some patients.
  • Radiation therapy can destroy tumors and/or prevent them from returning. It can be used by itself as the only treatment or in combination with surgery, chemotherapy, or both.
  • Memorial Sloan Kettering surgeons are dedicated not only to curing people with cancer but helping them recover fully after treatment.

During your treatment journey, you may experience symptoms from the disease or side effects from therapy that can take a toll on your body. At Memorial Sloan Kettering, they have an array of services that can help make you more comfortable during treatment. Their specialists in integrative medicine, palliative care and pain management, rehabilitation, and dermatologic health services are available to help you manage your symptoms.
